OUR LADY OF SLIGO by Sebastian Barry 2007 "Intensity and truth which leaves the audience spellbound" Daily Telegraph Synopsis (Author's Note) This is a play about my grandmother, as I imagine her to have been - I never met her and indeed she died before I was born. The real woman was no doubt different in many ways, perhaps entirely different. There was deal of suffering in her allotment of days, her own suffering and the suffering she caused others. For thirty odd years she has loomed there in the shadows of my life, a presence, a warning and a challenge. Of course the world that she belonged to, that middle class Catholic terrain of the Irish provinces in the first half of the 20th century, is gone, and was indeed not much of a consolation to her when it was there. She was to all intents and purposes entangled in the nets of that vanished world.
