THE ROAD TO MECCA by Athol Fugard New York Drama Critics Circla Award Best Foreign Play 1987 - 88 2007 Synopsis Set in the village of Nieu Bethesda in the desolate wasteland of the Karoo Valley in South Africa during the days of apartheid, is an emotional roller-coaster of love, loss, betrayal and ultimately trust re-born. The Road to Mecca tells the tale of Helen Martins, an Afrikaner, whose creation of Mecca in the grounds of her home caused consternation and hostility among the locals.
